Geological exploration work at TPI

The search for and exploration of mineral deposits is a complex, multifaceted geological exploration process requiring the use of cutting-edge technologies, in-depth expert knowledge and precise analytical methods.

It is not merely a sequence of steps, but a holistic system in which every stage — from formulating a concept of ore genesis to calculating reserves — is critical to the project’s ultimate success.

Our company, ‘GEOJET-GROUP’, which operates worldwide, including in Russia and Kazakhstan, specialises in providing a full range of services in the field of prospecting and exploration for solid mineral deposits, ensuring a significant reduction in risks and optimisation of costs at all stages of geological exploration work through the integration of knowledge-intensive technologies and field expertise.

Current challenges in exploration and prospecting

The global minerals and raw materials sector is facing a range of serious challenges that significantly complicate the process of discovering and evaluating new deposits. The era of easily accessible ‘near-surface’ deposits, discovered thanks to visible outcrops, has virtually come to an end. Mineral rights holders and mining companies are seeking out increasingly complex deposits. Traditional methods of geological exploration, based on large-scale mapping and extensive drilling, often prove insufficiently effective in today’s conditions, leading to a significant increase in project timelines and costs, as well as a high proportion of ‘dry’ wells.

map

The main challenges faced by subsoil users when organising exploration work include: the high cost of fieldwork, the limited duration of the field season, logistical difficulties and the challenges of working in hard-to-reach regions (Siberia, Yakutia, the Far East), the low effectiveness of traditional prospecting methods in locating ‘blind’ (non-surface) ore bodies, the need to commit significant investment at the early, highest-risk stages, and the high risk of negative outcomes.

These problems are particularly acute during the exploration of solid mineral deposits (such as gold, lithium and platinum group metals) in complex geological conditions, where traditional methods often prove to be ineffective. The search for placers (alluvial gold) also presents significant difficulties.

Geological exploration of deposits in today’s environment requires fundamentally new approaches and technological solutions that shift the focus from a ‘polycentric’ to a ‘data-centric’ paradigm. The increasing complexity of discovering new deposits, the greater depth at which ore bodies are found, and the need to operate in environmentally sensitive regions necessitate the introduction of innovative methods for deposit exploration, based on predictive analysis and digital modelling.

Innovative technologies as the basis for effective searching

‘GEOJET-GROUP’ has developed and is successfully implementing the unique VEDART RS® technology, which is revolutionising the traditional approach to the search for and exploration of hydrocarbon deposits. This technology is a multi-tiered data analysis platform that combines advanced methods of multispectral and hyperspectral analysis, morphostructural modelling and the processing of big data from Earth remote sensing (ERS), utilising machine learning algorithms to identify commercially promising areas.

The key advantages of VEDART RS® technology include the ability to identify promising areas with up to 90 per cent accuracy prior to the start of fieldwork, by recognising complex spatial relationships between geological features, a reduction in the area required for deposit exploration by a factor of 10 or more, which directly reduces the environmental impact; and the development of a detailed geological-genetic model of the ore body and a concept of ore genesis, which forms the basis for planning further work.

map

The technology enables a significant reduction in the time taken to conduct a preliminary assessment of a territory’s potential – the full cycle of work takes just 60 working days, which is several times faster than traditional approaches to geological exploration of deposits, providing a strategic advantage in the competition for resources.

The methodology involves a comprehensive geophysical survey of the deposit using ELECTRA HRX® technology for high-resolution, non-contact electrical prospecting (similar to electrical tomography) without the need for grounding, which is particularly effective for prospecting ore deposits (pyrite, copper-porphyry and quartz-vein deposits) and the search for placer deposits. Modern approaches to prospecting and evaluating deposits, based on cognitive analysis of heterogeneous data (geophysics, geochemistry, remote sensing), make it possible to identify promising zones for further investigation more accurately and to construct a 3D model of the ore zone even before drilling begins.

A comprehensive approach to exploration: from prospecting to reserve estimation

We offer a full range of services for the discovery and exploration of deposits, comprising several interlinked stages that provide a comprehensive solution to geological exploration challenges in Russia (the Russian Federation) and other regions. Our approach is based on the principles of sequential risk reduction and iterative model refinement.

1

During the preliminary analysis and prospect assessment stage, we carry out a comprehensive analysis of source geological data (archival materials, maps), process remote sensing data, perform multispectral analysis and morphostructural modelling to identify ore-controlling structures. This enables us to create a detailed predictive map of ore potential, highlighting prospective zones for subsequent field verification, ranked according to the probability of mineralisation discovery. Particular attention is paid to identifying prospective areas for mineralisation using modern data analysis algorithms, such as principal component analysis (PCA).

2

Field geophysical surveys are carried out using modern methods of geophysical exploration, including ELECTRA HRX® technology (high-resolution groundless electrical survey, which measures the natural electromagnetic field), BIEP (non-contact electrical field measurement) and ZSB (near-field field-development sounding). These methods enable the localisation of ore bodies and structures, and the mapping of zones of tectonic faults and oxidation, which is particularly important for the exploration of placer deposits and the search for ore deposits.

3

Data processing and interpretation are carried out using state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms for the classification of geological data, principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis of satellite imagery. This enables not only the interpretation of the data obtained, but also the identification of hidden patterns and associations that are not immediately apparent to the human eye. Analysis of geological exploration data makes it possible to identify characteristic anomalies and hidden ore zones that are missed by traditional methods, and to quantitatively assess the level of risk for each target site.

4

The assessment of resources and reserves involves calculating reserves in accordance with international standards (CRIRSCO – JORC, NI 43-101), preparing a feasibility study and carrying out geological due diligence to provide an objective, independent assessment of a project’s investment potential. Detailed exploration of a deposit, supported by our technology, enables us to determine resource volumes and identify optimal, cost-effective development approaches, whilst minimising capital and operating costs (CAPEX/OPEX).

Practical results and case studies: what we found

The effectiveness of our approach to mineral exploration has been demonstrated by numerous successful projects in various regions and involving different types of mineralisation.

In Central Asia:

As part of a project in Central Asia covering an area of 630 km², aimed at prospecting for rare-metal deposits (lithium, tantalum), three ore-bearing areas with different types of mineralisation (tungsten-molybdenum, tin-polymetallic) were identified, and five hidden ore zones were detected based on a set of indirect indicators.

Subsequent field verification, including lithochemical sampling and trenching, confirmed the high accuracy of the predictions - 87 per cent of the identified areas showed the presence of commercially significant concentrations of minerals.

This confirms the effectiveness and reliability of our methodology for predicting and prospecting for deposits, even for non-traditional types of raw materials.

In Eastern Kazakhstan:

Another example is the work carried out in Eastern Kazakhstan under a 500 km², licence, where, amidst complex folding and a cover of deluvial deposits, 13 prospective ore-bearing areas were identified, including gold-bearing beresites and copper-porphyry deposits.

Within these zones, 23 prospective sites with estimated deposit parameters were identified, enabling the client to focus their efforts and investments on the most promising areas, thereby reducing the priority work programme by 40 per cent.

This project clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach to prospecting and evaluating deposits in complex geological conditions.

In Kazakhstan:

We carried out a comprehensive assessment of the ore potential for copper and gold deposits across an area of 2,300 km².

As a result, five prospective areas with different genetic types of mineralisation (skarn, vein and porphyry) were identified, eight hidden ore zones not previously identified by earlier studies were discovered, and 11 priority sites for further work were determined.

Based on the data obtained, detailed recommendations were drawn up for the drilling of 63 boreholes, specifying azimuth and depth; this enabled the client to optimise the geological exploration programme and significantly reduce costs by avoiding drilling in unpromising areas.

The benefits of our approach

By choosing to partner with ‘GEOJET-GROUP’, you gain a number of significant competitive advantages that ensure the successful implementation of exploration and field development projects, based on the principles of cost-effectiveness and minimal risk.

Reducing financial risks:

our technology enables a significant reduction in the volume of costly fieldwork, particularly drilling, which accounts for up to 60 per cent of the budget, by identifying promising sites and optimising well locations. The cost savings can amount to 60–70 per cent of the total budget for geological exploration. This is particularly important in the exploration of solid mineral deposits, where the costs of drilling and other fieldwork account for a significant proportion of the budget.

Reduced time requirements:

the full cycle of work involved in assessing a site’s potential takes just 60 working days, rather than the traditional 12–24 months, thanks to the automation of data processing and preliminary modelling. This enables strategic decisions on further funding or withdrawal from the project to be taken much more quickly, and optimises the entire field exploration process.

Improved forecasting accuracy:

the use of machine learning algorithms and modern data analysis methods ensures a forecasting accuracy of 85–90 per cent (based on verification results), which is significantly higher (by 30–40 per cent) than that of traditional approaches. This is particularly important for the exploration of ore deposits and other valuable mineral resources, where errors in interpretation lead to direct financial losses.

The ability to operate in challenging conditions:

our technology is effective in hard-to-reach regions, including Arctic territories, high-altitude areas and dense forests, where traditional exploration methods are difficult or impossible due to logistical, cost or environmental constraints. This opens up new, previously inaccessible opportunities for geological exploration in Russia and other regions with challenging natural conditions.

Integration with existing systems:

all results are provided in standard digital formats (GIS-compatible layers, 3D models) that are compatible with leading GIS systems (ArcGIS, QGIS, Micromine, Surpac), ensuring easy integration into the client’s existing business processes and corporate databases. This is particularly important for advancing geological exploration work and ensuring data continuity across different project stages, from exploration to production.
